To end the year, we celebrated the excellent attendance achieved by the pupils for their attendance across the year. Two prizes were awarded to two lucky winners, whose names were drawn in a raffle!

To mark the end of another successful year, we awarded children from across the school for their behaviour and attitudes towards school. We also celebrated the achievements of pupils in year 2 and year 6 for their attainment in their SATs tests.

Music concert 15th Jul 2024

The pupils in Key Stage 2 enjoyed a music concert on Monday afternoon, with music from the pupils who have attended music clubs all year. Children from years 3, 4 and 5 performed pieces on the keyboards, guitars and then finished with 3 songs by the rock band. It was enjoyed by everyone!

Following a great Sports Day, we were excited to find out the winners in each event! Pupils who won 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place, received medals and a trophy was awarded to the house with the most points! Well done to Barnfield!

World War II workshop for year 6 13th Jun 2024

On Thursday 13th June, Year 6 enjoyed participating in a fantastic World War II workshop. The day began with storytelling of The Great War and the aftermath, before examining primary and secondary sources. The children later enjoyed activities in Morse code and secret cyphers, and finished the day being put through a rigorous 1940s workout.

Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Drayton Manor, where they got to experience a fun-filled day at a theme park. We carefully studied the fairground rides for our current DT topic – fairgrounds. In this topic the children will be designing and building their own fairground rides. We also got to explore different forms of advertisements and will use our experiences to support our computing unit where we will design and programme our own digital advertisements for Drayton Manor. We all had a great day: the kids loved every second of it! Well done Year 6 for another great trip!

Year 3 had a fantastic trip to Western-Super-Mare. It was a long journey but the children were very excited. We were lucky enough to have a ride on a donkey and eat some delicious ice cream. In addition, we had some fun on the beach playing in the sand and having a picnic. The day ended with us going for a walk along the pier. It is safe to say that both the staff and the children had a wonderful day.

Reception trip to Hatton Park 24th May 2024

On Thursday 24th May, Reception went to Hatton Country Park. The children saw lots of farm animals and pets; they explored the farm grounds and talked about the animals they saw. Children had the opportunity to feed and pet the animals; they really enjoyed petting the donkeys and guinea pigs! The tractor ride through the farm grounds, was so much fun! Reception ended the day at the super slide mania - it was amazing!

Nursery's 'The Tiger Who Came To Tea' workshop 23rd May 2024

On Thursday 23rd May Nursery hosted a ‘Tiger Who Came To Tea’ party. The children made their own cakes and sandwiches to eat at the party after meeting the chef from the school kitchen. Parents and carers were invited to the party and everyone enjoyed the refreshments and cakes the children had made.

Year 4 Anglo-Saxon workshop 22nd May 2024

On Wednesday 22nd May, year 4 took part in a workshop day to find out more about the Anglo-Saxons. They pretended to be archaeologists and examined the evidence to learn more about the Anglo-Saxons.

On Tuesday 21st May, Year 1 held a Phonics Workshop for parents. In this meeting, parents were given information about the upcoming Phonics Screening Test that their children will be taking part in during the final summer term as well as different ways that parents can support their children with their phonics over the half term holiday and the lead-up to the Phonics Screening Test. Thank you to all of the parents that attended this very important meeting.

Year 3 trip to Lunt Fort 16th May 2024

On Thursday 16th May. Year 3 visited Lunt Fort, as part of our history topic, the Romans. It was a fun packed day, as the children learnt about the Roman army and the armour that the soldiers would have worn. Furthermore, the children also had the opportunity to try on the armour, like the sword and shield. The children thoroughly enjoyed handling artefacts from the past and using their knowledge to discuss what they thought different artefacts would have been used for. Overall, we had a fantastic day learning about the Romans.

Year 5 trip to the Black Country Museum 7th May 2024

Year 5 had a very enjoyable day, learning about the Victorian era, at the Black Country Museum. They had the opportunity to look around houses and shops of that era, as well as a trip down the mines and a visit to the school room. One of the highlights was, of course, seeing the teachers being told off by the very strict school teacher!

Year 2 trip to Twycross Zoo 3rd May 2024

Year 2 had a fantastic day out at Twycross Zoo! The children were thrilled to see a wide variety of animals and learn about their habitats. Throughout the visit, they discovered numerous fascinating animal facts, sparking their curiosity and imagination. One of the highlights was navigating the Gruffalo Land and trying to find our way out! It was an unforgettable trip filled with education and fun!

Year 4 Viking Workshop 1st May 2024

On Wednesday 1st May, year 4 had a Viking workshop. They became Vikings, wearing typical Viking clothing and playing Viking games. The pupils then worked as archaeologists and discovered artefacts during this period. They even learnt how to use a bow and arrow as this was used traditionally in battle.

On Friday 26th April, year 5 pupils were taught basic first aid, to support the PSHE topic. They learnt how to put someone into the recovery position, create a sling and bandage a wound, amongst much more.

Year 6 trip to Cadbury World 24th Apr 2024

Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Cadbury World, where they learnt about the history of the Cadbury brand and its origin. As activities, Year 6 sampled Cadbury products, tempered their own chocolate and experienced the site’s 4D cinema and ride. They had a wonderful time!

On Tuesday 22nd April, the Little Dots Play Village came to Shaw Hill Primary School. The Nursery children had the opportunity to experience a range of role play areas to explore, enjoy and discover. The children were able to relive topics and themes they had been learning about throughout their nursery year. It was the perfect day for small people with big imaginations!

Roman workshop for year 3 19th Apr 2024

On Friday 19th April, year 3 children had a Roman Workshop. The children learnt a lot about the Romans and how they conquered different countries. We paid particular attention to what the Romans did to shape Britain to what it is today and we learnt about their powerful leaders. The children also found out about the tactics that the Roman army used, which enabled them to be so successful. The most enjoyable part of the day for the children was when we had a go at learning how to use a bow and an arrow in archery.

On Wednesday 16th April, reception hosted Pet Day. Ark Farm, parents and children brought in a selection of animals including kittens, a cat, a rabbit, guinea pigs, a tortoise, fish, a barn owl, a chinchilla and a dog. The children were given the opportunity to hold or stroke the animals if they wished. Having first-hand experience of these animals really enhanced the learning that has taken place for our topic this term. The children, parents and teachers had a wonderful day.

Year 2 had an exciting visit to the Think Tank, where the children thoroughly enjoyed their time in Mini Brum. They engaged in various activities such as building walls, visiting the hairdressers, and trying their hands at being dentists. Additionally, they took part in a healthy eating workshop and explored the vibrant science garden, participating in a wide range of thrilling scientific activities.

On Wednesday 13th March, Nursery parents attended Nursery’s personal, social and emotional and road safety workshop. Miss Arshad introduced this half term's book focus and the children performed a song for their parents and shared their knowledge of healthy foods. Miss Arshad also spoke about children taking care of their own personal needs independently. All children were given five challenges to complete at home and their very own toothbrush, toothpaste and sand timer.

We had a fabulous day on Thursday 7th March, when we celebrated World Book Day! It was wonderful to see all of the pupils dress up as book characters or come dressed in black and white to match the theme of our book. After a riveting book quiz to start the day, all classes did activities based on the book, 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse'.

Year 1 had a great day at the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. We saw lots of different animals which included penguins, sharks, turtles, otters and a variety of different fish. We learnt lots about these different animals. We all had a very fun day!

Map Skills Workshop 7th Feb 2024

Pupils in years 1, 2, 3 and 5 enjoyed a map skills workshop to support their learning in geography. During the workshop, pupils were taught how to find the directions on a compass, read symbols on a map and how to estimate distance. They then took part in orienteering on the school playground.

During the spring term, the children in reception have been learning about the people who help us. As part of this topic the little village came to Shaw Hill. Children had the opportunity to experience roleplay the people in the community. They became doctors, police officers, superheroes and so much more. The play stations were innovative and life-like and the children were totally mesmerised.

On Friday 26th January Nursery parents attended Nursery’s Owl Babies workshop. This half terms book focus was explained and what the children will be learning in their Literacy and Numeracy provocation. The children were given a paper plate and two cupcake cases to create their own owl. Also, children were given five challenges to complete at home with their families. The class then enjoyed hearing about how the children made their owls when they brought them into school to show everyone.

The children in Year 2 had a special visitor in school and took part in a workshop to support their learning of the Great Fire of London. The visitor played the part of an eye witness who experienced the Great Fire of London in 1666. She discussed the key events in detail with the children. They had so much fun!

As part of the Year 3 History unit in the Autumn term, we took part in a workshop that took us back in time. We learnt about the era in an exciting way and found out a lot of information about the way that the stone age people lived. Activities included making stone age weapons, learning about how archaeologists made discoveries and archery. They thoroughly enjoyed their day!
